RAIGAD FORT SOLAR LAMP PROJECT

Raigad fort-the capital fort of Maratha king Chhatrapathi Shivaji Maharaj-is an ancient beautiful fort situated near Mahad in Raigad district of Maharashtra. The fort has a rich history behind it and many ancient remains are still a point of attraction here.

Tens and hundreds of tourists/trekkers visit Raigad every year. Once on the top of the fort, there are not many food or living options. There are few families which lives on the top of the fort and serve breakfast/meal/dinner to the people who visit Raigad. They also provide accommodation overnight in their small house to anybody who needs it.

We happened to meet one such family of “Neelamtai Avkirkar’s” on our visit to the fort. The men trek down and up the fort to the nearest grocery stores/market in Mahad village for groceries and basic needs. There is no electricity on top of Raigad fort. Every night the family spends in kerosene lamps and candlelight. Absence of electricity is a hindrance to so many daily necessities one has.

On our many trips to Raigad, we as a group, “Durgvihar”, try to help the family in whatever way we can. On our last visit to the fort, we gifted the family a solar lamp-for their daily needs. Though a small contribution, our effort through this act of donation was to help the family in whatever way we could.  The family members were very grateful to us and one could see the happiness through their eyes.

We will continue to spread happiness and joy to such less priveliged families through the “Act of Giving”
